Collection lasting perfection concealer & maybelline fit me concealer

Finding a good concealer on the high street was a bit of a struggle up until quite recently but nowadays it seems that we’re spoilt for choice.  Chances are your favourite ~expensive~ concealer has a cheaper counterpart that does pretty much the same job (or close enough anyway, sometimes the more pricey items really are just better).  Concealer is also the one item, well maybe it and mascara, that you can grab on your way out the door in a rush and still be fairly confident that it will make you look like you definitely got more than four hours sleep the night before.  It also helps stave off the “are you ill?” comments because thanks Sharon, I’m fine, I just didn’t have time for makeup this morning.  Here’s a rundown of some of the best concealers you can pick up for under £10:

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (from £4.19 here): This is an old favourite and a product I continually come back to.  It’s great because it takes care of both spots and dark circles which are probably the biggest complaints most of us have with our skin.  Unless you have neither, in which case you and your perfect skin have no business reading a post about concealer so bye!  Just kidding…ish.

Maybelline Fit Me! Concealer (from £5.99 here): Widely hailed as a dupe for the famous NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (from £22.50 here), I have to admit it’s not a million miles off.  It is a touch more moisturising than the Collection Lasting Perfection and for that reason it does have a tendency to crease under the eyes, so the oily-skinned among us should definitely take the time to set this well with powder.  This is a positive when it comes to covering spots as it doesn’t accentuate the dryness though, so swings and roundabouts.

Maybelline The Eraser Eye Concealer (from £5.99 here): Two from Maybelline!  I guess they really know what they’re about when it comes to concealer.  This is exclusively for the under eye area (well you could use it elsewhere, who am I to tell you what to do?) and it does a damn good job of it.  It is colour correcting so helps to take the darkness out of your dark circles.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Concealer (from £7.49 here): The fabled foundation has a concealer to match!  If you’ve ever heard of Healthy Mix you’ll know that it’s a real radiance booster and this is in a similar vein.  Good to go for both under eye & spots and it’s in a nice squeezy tube, which is my personal favourite concealer dispenser method.

Now tell me, what’s your favourite budget concealer?

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01

Blind buying a perfume is always risky business, especially when said perfume is allegedly not something you will be able to smell on yourself even when it arrives.  Yep, I’m talking about Escentric Molecules Molecule 01, which has reached almost cult status at this point.  Rumour has it that everyone you come into contact with will demand to know what heavenly scent you are wafting about the place.  Real life?  Well.  Ish.

I have had a few people enquire as to what perfume this is when I’m wearing it.  A typical conversation will go along the lines of…

Person: “Oh you smell nice, what are you wearing?”

Me: “It’s this perfume called Molecule 01, I can’t smell it but apparently it smells different on everyone and you’re supposed to smell really good when you wear it.”

Person: “Right… cool.”

A couple of things to pick up on; it is supposed to smell different on everyone as it mixes with your own natural scent and yes, I am perhaps not the most gifted conversationalist you will ever encounter.

What I like to do the most with Molecule 01 is layer it with a few of my other favourite perfumes, the rationale behind this is that if Molecule 01 enhances your natural scent then hell, it’s going to make a great perfume smell even greater!  I have very little evidence to back this theory up because, well, if someone tells me  I smell nice it could just be the perfume I have mixed it with.

You know what though?  I will repurchase this when I run out.  There’s something deeply refreshing about a perfume that doesn’t repeat on you all day, you’re just safe in the knowledge that you smell lovely.  Maybe.

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 is available in 3 variations: 30ml refill (from £27), 30ml with travel case (from £38) and 100ml (from £65.50).

The Ordinary: A Rundown

$

Processed with VSCO with hb2 presetHappy new year all!

I will try and keep this as short and sweet as possible but as The Ordinary was the best thing to happen to my skin in 2016 I couldn’t let it slide without chatting about it.

love this brand.  It’s very cheap, no nonsense skincare that gets to the guts of what you really need.  I thought I would do a rundown of the products I have used, the price, when I use them, what they claim to do and the difference they have made for me.  I’ll add to this post as I try more because I’m going to buy them all. Every. Last. One.  It’s that good.

Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA (£7.00): I use this every other morning after I cleanse and before I moisturise.  It is supposed to reduce the sight of spots & hyper pigmentation.  Although I can’t speak on the latter I find it really calms spots when they appear, however, it doesn’t stop them completely because in my experience only a divine miracle can do that.  You know the mark left behind when the spot dies though?  That is my biggest problem and Alpha Arbutin helps to clears these little marks up nice and quick.

Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG (£5.80):  The ‘eye cream’ of the brand – used morning and night before serum & moisturiser.  It claims to reduce pigmentation and puffiness under the eyes.  In all honesty I’ve never met an eye cream that has blown me away, probably because my under eye area is the least of my concerns.  It sits nicely under makeup which is the greatest contribution I can make but it costs less than £6 which is very rare for an eye cream so I would still recommend it.

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (£5.90):  Used morning and night, the step immediately before moisturiser/night cream.  This is the hydrator of the bunch and that’s exactly what it does.  My skin is dehydrated (most people are in the same boat), especially in winter, so this is a complete necessity and really helps to keep on top of the dry patches that just appear out of nowhere.  A must for everyone.

Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% (£5.90):  Used PM, after I cleanse.  It is a chemical exfoliant that encourages radiance and sloughs away dead skin cells without any scrubbing involved.  This I would not advise if your skin isn’t used to reasonably strong acids (glycolic, salicylic) already; it does come in a weaker, 5%, formulation too though.  I always wake up a little brighter the morning after using this.  My skin that is, not on a mental level.  I’m not really a morning person.

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (£5.00):  I also use this every other morning after I cleanse and before I moisturise; yep, in between Alpha Arbutin uses.  Geared towards clearing blemishes and congestion that’s exactly what it does for me.  Remember how I said my skin is basically an elephant’s graveyard for spots? Yeah, this really helps with shifting all those stubborn spot marks.

Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% (£4.90):  Used AM & PM before serum & moisturiser.  Yet something else to brighten the skin!  I love this in the morning before I put makeup on just to give an extra little boost but it’s also great at night to have that radiance ticking over.

If you fancied buying everything in this post it would cost you £34.50. For six extremely high quality and high performing skincare items.  We’ve all spent that on one product before hoping it was the answer to our prayers, haven’t we?

Just a final note, if you’re going to use acids on your please, please make sure you use SPF too!  Even though we don’t see the sun in this part of the world for 95% of the year, it’s still important.

Now go enjoy some of The Ordinary!  The best thing that happened to skincare in 2016 (in my humble opinion anyway).

January Favourites

$

Processed with VSCO with hb2 presetWhat better time than January to start a new blog series of monthly favourites?  There is an overriding theme here FYI; I have been very drawn towards products that make my life much, much easier.

Illamasqua Brow Build (from £17.99 here): You know those days where you gotta look presentable but doing your brows properly just isn’t gonna happen?  This is a godsend for that.  It has little fibres that fill out your natural brow hairs without looking unnatural, plus it keeps them in place all day.  It also looks great when you have gone the extra mile to use powder/pencil/gel/pomade/am I forgetting anything?

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (from £4.19 here): I’ve upgraded this to ‘I can never be without you’ since the last time I spoke about it briefly here.  This is because it’s brilliant and so cheap and provides everything you could want from a concealer.  I’m very prone to just slapping it where I need and heading out the door instead of bothering with foundation because I am efficient (okay lazy).

Batiste Bare Dry Shampoo (from £1.48 for 200ml here): Honestly I am just all about this stuff for the nostalgia; it really smells like an old Impulse body spray that I & 95% of the female population in the 90s/early 00s used to wear.  I can’t remember the name but it really takes me back to the days of Tammy Girl t-shirts & hair bobbles with cubes on them.  Oh and it does the job more importantly.

The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres (from £4.90 here) & The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% (from £5.80 here): I spoke about the brand at length here.  I could have picked anything but I decided to single out these two products; the Lactic Acid 10% for its resurfacing properties which is very useful when your skin is gross and dry in winter and the Vitamin C Suspension for radiance because man do I need it right now.  Small side note: I’m super excited to see even more retailers stocking this brand now, we’re up to three on BeauCo!  It’ll be everywhere this year so you should absolutely get involved.

Garnier Body Repair Anti-Dryness Restoring Lotion (from £2.65 for 400ml here): Getting out of a nice warm shower to the piercing cold daggers of winter is pretty soul destroying and the last thing you want to do is moisturise your limbs.  That’s why a lotion that dries in quickly but is also moisturising is key and this stuff really does the job.  I know it’s pretty boring to talk about but it’s always the boring things that are most important.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 | Review

IMG_0739

If you’re looking for a cheap, quick and easy way to get some moisture into your skin then look no further.  I apply The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid morning and night before moisturiser & with consistent use I notice a massive reduction in the dry spots on my skin.  You know what I’m talking about; you think your skin is nice and moisturised, you put your foundation on and oh wow, it appears there’s now a tiny desert ecosystem in between your eyebrows?  Cute.  Well this pretty much stops that.  It’s as effective as any other hyaluronic acid serum I have ever used and is definitely the cheapest.  It’s also very light and absorbs into the skin quickly so can absolutely be used before makeup; it’s actually a go-to pre-makeup staple for me now.

Quick note: if you have oily skin (like me) you can still benefit from this as there’s a very good chance it (your skin) is also dehydrated.  Caroline Hirons has a great post on the difference between dry & dehydrated skin here.

Buy The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 here, from £5.90.

Three Steps to Hydrated Skin For Under £20

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

It’s January and everything is bleak.  You’ve probably long abandoned any resolutions (who needs ‘em anyway?) and you’re longing for the brighter mornings and nights.  It’s nice when it feels like there’s more than 30 minutes of sunlight in a day am I right?

If you’re anything like me then dry January is more applicable to your skin than your gin intake.  Things are flaky and you have textured patches that foundation just loves to settle in.  There are three brilliant products from my favourite budget skincare brand The Ordinary that will slip into your skincare routine and help keep your face nice and hydrated right through the cold snap.

First up is The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution (from £6.80 for 240ml).  Exfoliation is such an important step in the fight against dry patches and this stuff is nice and mild.  Designed for daily use post-cleanse, it also contains ginseng root & aloe vera to soothe your skin.

If your skin is used to acids then you could ramp it up to the Lactic Acid 5% or 10% (from £5.50 & £5.80 respectively).  Remember if you have any acids in your skincare routine then suncreen is an absolute must!!

Then you gotta start on the actual hydration.  I always have a bottle of The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (from £5.90 for 30ml) in my stash, it basically helps your skin retain moisture.  There’s two ways I like to use it; either before I apply moisturiser or a few drops mixed into moisturiser for an added boost.  For me this is the cheapest & most effective way to ramp up the skins hydration levels.

Finally, moisturiser. I use The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA (from £4.90 for 30ml) before makeup in the morning because it is hydrating but not oily.  I don’t know about you but finding a moisturiser that actually sits nicely under foundation can be a real task & this stuff is definitely up to it.

All three products would be suited to any skin type (if you are very sensitive then the Glycolic Acid might not be for you); it’s important to remember that even oily skin requires hydration!

Total cost is £17.60.  Much better than panic buying an expensive serum or cream that promises the earth but doesn’t deliver.

What are your favourite products to help combat the cold weather?

burt_s_bees_vitamin_e_body___bath_oil_115ml_1367480934_1Another great little gift is a bath oil, like the Burt’s Bees Lemon & Vitamin E Bath & Body Oil (from £6.65). Some bath oil, a face mask and a few candles lit & she’ll feel like she’s having a spa experience. Except you can watch The Crown & drink wine in the bath at home so even better maybe?

Finally, lipstick! Or rather, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. There are a tonne of shades in this range but the Soft Matte Lip Cream in Morocco (from £6) is a beautiful, striking red.

We thought it would be nice to do a little spotlight on the brands available on BeauCo; what they’re about, where they’re available, the must-have products, famous fans etc etc

First up we have OUAI Haircare, a brand founded by celeb hairstylist Jen Atkin.

What it’s about: Hair, obviously. OUAI aims to make great hair easy & accessible.  And you shouldn’t have to spend a fortune for your hair to look amazing.

Where it’s available: lots of our fave retailers now stock OUAI!  ASOS, Cult Beauty, Feel Unique, HQHair, John Lewis, Look Fantastic & SpaceNK

Must-haves:

  • Memory Mist (from £25); a heat protectant that locks in your style until the next wash
  • Dry Shampoo Foam (from £10 & £25); a, well, dry shampoo foam that doesn’t leave a white powdery residue
  • Wave Spray (from £22); for that “oh no I didn’t spend any time on my hair at all” beachy look
  • Hair Oil (from £24); to tame frizz & leave your hair glossy
  • Volume Spray (from £22); when your hair has gone flat & you want it to be big & bouncy, without stickiness or crispiness

Who loves it?: Well Jen is the hairstylist for the Kardashians & Chrissy Teigen so it’s pretty safe to say they’re fans!

OUAI is the type of brand that makes you feel cooler than you are and looks dreamy sitting on your dresser (yes you will get a great Insta snap out of it!). Jen wanted to create products that women could relate to & fit in to their busy lives. We’re all gals on the go! If you want to keep your routine fuss-free then it might one for you to check out.

Do you have any faves from OUAI?
